Countdown to Spiritual Warfare
The DC40 prayer campaign launches today in Hawaii: state by state the “40 Days of Light and Fire over D.C.” intends to change the District of Columbia into the “District of Christ.” The 51 day prayer guide is available for download on the DC40 website. The Dominionists intend to focus their will on the statue of Columbia which resides above the Capitol dome with the intention of turning the members of Congress to their vision of theocratic rule.
The Pagan folk have been writing rituals and prayers to strengthen and defend this “Goddess of Liberty” from the malefic spellcraft of the Far-Far-Religious Right.
I think the Dominionists of the DC40 may have taken on more than they can handle. In a passing conversation on The Archdruid Report about the prayer campaign, Archdruid John Michael Greer noted that an intense 51 day focus upon the statue of Columbia might charge that icon of liberty. Instead of psychically tearing down Columbia, the prayer campaign and the Pagan counter-resistance might actually create an object of real magical power.
What irony if that “40 Days of Light and Fire” created a shield to protect D.C. from the establishment of a Christian theocracy!

And the third idea to come from that brief conversation: the DC40 campaign has scheduled its crescendo for October 31 thru November 2. They are taking dead aim at Halloween, All Saints Day, and the Day of the Dead. There is some speculation among Pagans that prayer leaders may intend to protest at the Lincoln Monument where Washington D.C. Pagans hold an annual drumming circle.
This is hubris on the part of the DC40 leaders! Samhain is not only our most sacred holiday, it is the time when the Veil between the Worlds is at its thinnest. It is the time when we can reunite with our ancestors. This is the time when we can call directly on this country’s Founders! We can call the spirits of Washington, Jefferson, and Adams. We can call Ann Hutchinson and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony! We can call Lincoln and Lee and Walt Whitman and Louisa May Alcott. We can call out to the soldiers who lie buried at Arlington National Cemetery. We could call the passengers of American Airlines Flight 77 who died at the Pentagon on 9/11…
