The Light in Winter

Another Solstice, another Yule. It’s the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It’s a full moon with a lunar eclipse and with Mercury retrograde (appearing to move backwards through the zodiac). Yule is a time for setting aside the habits and situations we have outgrown, and for establishing new goals. The full moon is a source of energy, empowerment. Mercury retrograde tends to screw up communication, transportation plans, electronics…all the things that can naturally fuzz up a holiday. Mercury retrograde says step back, wait… The long night and the deep cold says, roll over! sleep!

Or, as I read somewhere on Facebook today, “Will this long night ever end? Yes!”

Pardon me while I get some dessert and another glass of wine. –I have feasted well tonight: roast chicken, jasmine rice with mushrooms and broccoli, an artisan cheese soaked in merlot, merlot sans fromage, and date nut pudding with lemon sauce. And some grapes! Red, seeded grapes! I am wondering if I can stay awake long enough to watch my new copy of Fantasia/Fantasia 2000.

The magic of Yule is hard to put into words but easier to put into images. These are some of the images from Beacon Road in Norwood:
